Abstract

The production processes for polygranular carbon and graphite materials are equivalent to those applied in the ceramic industry. Petroleum coke, coal-tar pitch (CTP) coke, anthracite, natural graphite, and carbon black are commonly used as raw materials in the production of industrial carbon artifacts. Although CTP is the common binder material for the solid filler material, in some cases, polymer resins and petroleum-derived pitch are used. Binder materials are needed not only to glue the unmeltable solid carbon particles together but also to give the mixture of solids and binder plasticity under forming temperatures. Their most important task however is the formation of the unmeltable carbon material, CTP coke, or petroleum coke. Petroleum pitch can be obtained from the lube oil process, from asphaltic residues from vacuum distillation, and from deasphalting units.
