Abstract
The three-level active neutral-point clamped voltage source converter (3L-ANPC-VSC) provides some important advantages compared to the two-level voltage source converter (2L-VSC), for example a higher power density. Despite these benefits the implementation of a 3L-ANPC-VSC with multiple half-bridge modules causes challenges. One key issue is the large stray inductance during long commutations, which could result in undesired overvoltages and oscillations. This paper presents one phase leg of a 3L-ANPC-VSC using silicon carbide (SiC) MOSFET half-bridge modules. In order to compensate effects of the high stray inductance a resistively damped decoupling capacitor (RC-circuit) is employed. Measurements show, voltage oscillations are effectively suppressed while the overvoltage during switching is significantly reduced.
