Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of the state-of-the-art in the area of multifunctional, ultra-lightweight, ultra-thin and bendable organic and large-area electronic (OLAE) systems. This chapter introduces three possible applications, all based on a fully printed, textile compatible, sound module: textile integrated audio module including broadcast radio and solar supply; active receiver tag for wireless streaming of acoustic data and advertizing; and security tag system with acoustic alarm, motion and/or temperature sensors. There are reviews of the OLAE components and systems required for these applications. For the realization of these components and systems, the advantages of several flexible OLAE technologies need to be combined, while keeping cost at a minimum. Interface and packaging issues are discussed for full system integration on a common flexible foil enabling bending radii down to 1 cm. By combining these components, a variety of novel multifunctional OLAE systems can be enabled: the resulting market potential is discussed at the end of the chapter.
