Abstract
The spread of invasive insect species in forests is a biological process that is difficult to control. The timely detection of these species is always an absolute prerequisite for regulatory measures. In particular, detailed knowledge of the biology, chemical communication and swarming behavior of invasive species is necessary.
Our study focused on developing innovative technological methods for the early detection, trapping and monitoring of the black stem borer (Xylosandrus germanus). This species is non-native to Germany but is widespread. As climate change progresses, more and more damage is to be expected from the black stem borer due to its potential to spread and its wide range of host tree species.
Various semiochemicals were tested in several field trials. In particular, we identified the optimal attractant combination of ethanol and acetic acid and their application rate for trapping X. germanus. Furthermore, different trap types such as funnel, slot, panel, window and baker traps were modified and tested in different forest stands. The black colored panel trap proved to be the most suitable.
This talk will detail our findings on trapping methods and a monitoring system for X. germanus.
