Abstract

Partial discharge (PD) models help to better understand the influencing factors on the PD activity of defects in insulation materials and can thereby improve the reliability of electrical equipment in energy grids. With the growing use
of power electronics, the incorporation of distorted voltages (e.g. square-wave and harmonic distorted voltages with higher-frequency components) in PD models is necessary. In this contribution, a conductance-based model for internal PDs is used to analyze the frequency dependency of the model’s output
while varying a single input parameter – the ‘charge decay time constant’. The results show that the evaluated PD repetition rate is strongly frequency-dependent and especially sensitive to input parameter variation in the range around 50 / 60 Hz. This analysis helps to further develop PD models to incorporate distorted voltages while maintaining physical accuracy.
