Abstract
Factoring in recent insights from Trans* and Intersex studies, this chapter asks how masculinity can be queered and dislodged from the cis white male body, and how this emphasis on difference and plurality contributes to a better and more differentiated concept of gender identity. Therefore, the chapter suggests an understanding of masculinity as a ‘narrative structure’ which functions similarly to the literary text. It argues that there is an important analogy between the subject who envisions or experiences their masculinity, and the position of the reader. Thus, it shows that deconstructive narratological approaches can help identify and demystify the workings of patriarchal and heteronormative norms ‘in and through narrative, and expose the dominant stories’ that produce the illusion of a ‘natural’ interiority of gender identity. Drawing on critics such as Ermarth, Lacan, Bhabha and de Man, it is further argued that art—especially literature—not only possesses a kind of knowledge about masculinity that is relevant for a better understanding of its construction, but that it also features a co-constructive potential. This potential enables the subject to become the agent of their own narrative, allowing them to continually question and critically re-construct their own masculinity beyond traditional gender binaries.
