Modelling Vibro-Acoustic Behaviour of Membrane Absorbers

Abstract

Membrane absorbers are frequently used structures for narrowband absorption of noise in room acoustics. These absorbers are based on the resonance phenomenon and convert sound energy into thermal energy through vibration that occur in the front panels. The dynamic behaviour of membrane absorbers is of great importance and can be modelled to investigate whether the desired absorption requirements are fulfilled. In this study, vibro-acoustic modelling of box-shaped membrane absorbers was investigated. Coupled models were created using the commercial software (Wave6) utilizing boundary element (BE) and finite element (FE) methods. During the numerical study, various front panel properties and the size of the back volumes were examined. The findings were validated by experiments in an anechoic environment. It was observed that the generated models could represent the vibro-acoustic behaviour of membrane absorbers. The results confirm that the dynamic behaviour of membrane absorbers can be predicted with high accuracy using the approach used in this paper.
