Abstract
In recent years, memory retrieval has been a rising aspect under investigation in urban soundscape studies. This aspect involves how people interpret and understand the sonic environment as they experience and recall it in memory (ISO 12913-1, 2014). Several types of memory retrieval, including sensory, short-term, and long-term, will be considered in this project. The investigations will connect these types of memories with wanted and unwanted types of sound sources, as well as how it is possible to improve the sonic environment through sound design, interventions and noise control measures. The knowledge gathered in this project will map and provide essential findings to understand the influence of urban soundscapes in memory retrieval by highlighting how the sonic environment can damage cognitive processes. Additionally, the project will show how to enhance healthy and restorative soundscapes, reversing adverse outcomes on cognitive and mental processes.
