Scientists are increasingly quoted in news coverage. This article addresses the question wether journalists use scientists as “opportune witnesses” (Hagen, 1992), that is, select those whose position they share. Despite extensive research on the role scientists play in news output, little is known about their strategic use beyond the instrumental updating of their statements. Research on the concept of opportune witnesses scantly deals with the suitability of this specific group and also excludes the perspective of journalists. Guided interviews with sixteen print journalists reveal, at least according to their testimony, that they do not consistently use scientists as opportune witnesses, as the latter are often consulted due to a lack of journalists’ own expertise. In addition, position is a rather complex selection criterion to research, which is often less relevant compared to other criteria such as their compatibility with media and reporting. Nevertheless, the results point to differences between departments, scientific disciplines, and publication rhythms.
