Abstract
Long-term application of fertilizers in agriculture, autotrophic denitrification and direct inputs have led to increased sulphate concentrations in an alluvial aquifer. An intensive case study for the catchment area of a water works in Germany was started in 1999. Options for groundwater management are discussed based on the initial identification and quantification of the main sources for sulphate in the aquifer.
