Abstract
Raccoon dog, American mink and raccoon - which were introduced in Germany, mostly through fur farms and several outbreaks in the early to mid-1900s - are nowadays a main concern for the protection of native waterfowls and colonial birds. Under directive of the European Union, regulation 1143/2014 was enacted in 2014 to prevent and manage the introduction and spread of all invasive alien species. For this thesis 13 areas located mostly in eastern Germany were selected where at least one of the above species occurs and causes predation under terns or gulls. Guided interviews were conducted with the persons responsible for the execution of management measures in the respective areas to investigate which predators are relevant and what methods are used and effective for a direct and indirect management. Effective indirect methods are rafts with passive protective measures or enclosures consisting of mesh and stranded wires including elements which prevent predators climbing over or digging under. For an indirect management, hunting via traps before the breeding time is able to reduce the predation pressure. A permanent implementation of effective measures is important due to the potential of the considered species to repopulate. In four areas eagle owls, which are protected in Germany, are a current problem, against those these steps are not working. Whether additional methods, like switching rafts between different locations, are suitable options to reduce the pressure of raptorial birds still have to be surveyed. A nationwide collaboration could help to improve the realization of proper management.
