Abstract
Dresden's Castle was destroyed in February 1945 to a large extent. Its gradual reconstruction took several decades. The last major building task was the reconstruction of the Schützkapelle (in English: Schütz Chapel). The biggest challenge was the construction of a masonry rib vault according to its historic model. Because of difficulties in accurately determining the mathematical description of the vault, a load test was conducted on a 1:1 model of one bay of the vault. For the load application, 48 tie rods were used. A total of six main load cases were tested. The ultimate load-bearing capacity and the serviceability of the vault were successfully demonstrated.
