Abstract

In industry, there is a requirement for a highly productive additive manufacturing process that enables the processing of copper-zinc alloys. The subject of this work is to investigate the suitability of gas metal arc welding (GMAW) with hotwire for the additive processing of these alloys. A special feature of this process is the combination of two wires with different material compositions in the weld pool to produce the target alloy. As part of the investigations, welding experiments are carried out with different process configurations to determine suitable welding parameters. Subsequently wall structures are manufactured. The properties of these wall structures are investigated using light microscopy, tensile tests, hardness tests, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy,
eddy current-based measurements of electrical conductivity and measurements of oxygen content using hot gas extraction. The results show that the additive processing of copper-zinc alloys is possible with GMAW with hotwire, although the achievable zinc content is actual limited to approximately 10 to 15 %.
