Investigating Reinforced Concrete Beams under Soft and Hard Impact

Abstract

The objective of this study was to investigate and compare the response of reinforced concrete beams without stirrups to hard and soft impacts. Beams without stirrups were chosen as a representation of slab strips. The beams were 1450 mm long with a cross-section of 130 mm × 280 mm. For this study, we used an 11-meter-high drop tower facility. The impactor velocities ranged between 10 m/s to 22 m/s. The research goal was to compare the responses of the beams in terms of maximal displacements and reaction forces. The results were used to gain insight into reinforced concrete’s behavior under impact using lesscomplex beam specimens as proxies for the more intricate slab specimens. The study’s findings can be used in future research to design and test slab specimens. In addition, the presented results of this paper can be used for the validation or calibration of numerical models.
