Abstract
Lightweight drive shafts made of fibre-reinforced plastics (FRP) provide essential advantages in powertrains compared to classic metallic shafts. Conventional lightweight FRP-drive shafts usually consist of a wound FRP-pipe structure for the load transmission and load introduction elements at both ends, which ore still made of metallic materials due to the functional surfaces as well as the occurring complex states of stress. But such a lightweight design is only suited for very long drive-shafts due to the weight of the metallic components. Therefore a novel integral design for FRP-drive shafts with a partially integrated cardan joint and length adjustment has been developed at the Institute of Lightweight Engineering and Polymer Technology (ILK), TU Dresden.
