Abstract

Different researchers noticed a significant heat generation due to cyclic loading on concrete specimens (von der Haar et al., 2016), (Elsmeier, 2015). The authors of this publication analysed this behaviour and the resulting thermal influence by performing fatigue tests on normal strength concrete. During the tests, the temperatures inside the specimens and on their surfaces were measured with thermocouples. A thermographic camera recorded the temperature distributions on the surfaces. The results show that the heat generation depends on the test frequency, the stress range and the maximum stress level. A further analysis of the temperature distribution and the temperature development shows significant correlations between the temperature behaviour and the damage behaviour. These connections include the location of the fracture, the progress of the damage and the number of cycles to failure. For each specimen the fracture area corresponds to the area with the highest temperatures during the tests. Furthermore, the strain and the temperature develop in a similar way over the test duration with higher increasing rates at the beginning of the test and before the failure. Moreover, the warming rate at the beginning of each test indicates the number of cycles to failure.
