Good cheese and nutritious carbs: Evaluation and engagement features in mountaineering food blogs

Abstract

Mountaineering food blogs intend to inform beginning and advanced mountaineers about nutritional requirements as well as practical aspects related to food and drink consumption in the mountains. This study investigates to what extent evaluation and engagement features are employed in a corpus of 30 mountaineering food blog posts. More specifically, the analysis focuses on frequent collocates of the words food and nutrition, expressions of evaluation, reader mentions, imperatives, and the use of questions in the corpus. Overall, the study reveals that, similar to what other studies have found for other types of blogs, various evaluation and engagement features are employed in the corpus. Interestingly, many such evaluation and engagement features occur across most texts in the dataset, further lending evidence to blog writing as its own type of register. As evaluative forms, attitudinal expressions and adjectives such as good and easy are frequently used in the blog posts. In order to engage readers, in turn, directly addressing them using the forms you and your is particularly frequent, although imperatives are also frequently used. It is argued that the overuse of evaluation and engagement features (and monetary interests by some blog authors) may potentially be at odds with being clear and informative on a topic that may have an impact on the health especially of beginning mountaineers.
