Abstract

This paper explores the gender (de)constructions enacted through the linguistic practices of German football ultras, focusing on selected banners and other typical fan practices. Starting from the premise that the stadium and, specifically, the fan block function as relevant communication spaces, the study analyzes the discursive negotiation of gender. Using a hermeneutic-textual analytical approach grounded in gender theory (drawing from linguistics, sociology, and gender studies), three discursive phenomena are examined: the negotiation of gender during Doing Ultra, the pejorative external ascription of trans identities, and the reproduction of the binary gender order. The analysis reveals a highly normatized hypermasculine ultra-identity, enforced through explicit exclusionary practices (e.g., barring women from specific sections) and pejorative positioning. Key findings show that Ultra fan blocks serve as complex invective communication spaces where prevailing social discourses on gender are actively negotiated, e. g. the invective ascription of trans identities serving as a mechanism of secondary stigmatization to assert group dominance, while the assertive reproduction of the binary gender order stabilizes the in-group's normative, cis-hetero-masculine framework.
