The journal Der Landarzt, founded in 1919, is the predecessor of today’s Zeitschrift für Allgemeinmedizin. From 1933–1936, the Landarzt temporarily bore the title Zentralblatt für Landärzte. In addition to medical content, the journal traditionally addressed professional policy and practical everyday topics for rural physicians. Articles on “racial hygiene” appeared in the Landarzt as early as 1929, so that the National Socialist takeover in 1933 did not represent a particular turning point in this respect. From 1937, the journal was published by Hippokrates-Verlag in Stuttgart. As a result, the pre-existing trend towards naturopathy and homeopathy intensified, which was in line with the orientation of National Socialist health policy at the time. Hopes for sustained support for rural physicians by the National Socialists were only partially realised and were obsolete by the Second WorldWar at the latest. In autumn 1944, the Landarzt had to cease publication due to the war.
