Abstract
The development of durable pavements requires knowledge on the loading conditions of the layered pavement structure due to rolling tire loads, whereby the stresses and strains inside the pavement depend on the pavement structure itself, the current temperature state and on the loading conditions (tire load, tire speed, tire type etc.). Furthermore, the tire contact stresses are influenced by the friction properties between tire rubber and rough pavement surface. The article presents a coupled finite element (FE) model of tire-pavement-interaction, which enables a realistic representation of all mentioned influences. It consists of a thermome-chanical FE-model of the layered pavement and a thermomechani-cal FE-tire model, which are coupled sequentially by a program interface. The applied relative kinematical (Arbitrary Langrangian Eu-lerian (ALE)) formulation of the pavement and the tire allows for a numerically efficient description of the steady state rolling tire on the pavement. The representation of rubber friction on a rough surface is determined numerically by a multiscale friction homogenization procedure. The potential of the tire-pavement-interaction model for structural investigations is pointed out by several examples.
