Abstract

Utilisation of compressed wood (CW) holds tremendous promise for retention of the adhesive and metallic mechanical engineered wood products (EWPs) that suffer from several limitations. To overcome these issues, this study aims to develop means to provide adhesive free, non-metallic, timber products for mainstream applications. Through the experimental determination of strength and stiffness properties of the compressed wood materials for beech and spruce species, we report that compression of wood Significantly improves the mechanical properties. After small scale tests, a large-scale size of the experimental testing program (slab) was performed to investigate the behaviour of uncompressed and compressed wooden dowels in different test configurations. Finally, numerical models were developed to seek a better understanding of the load-bearing behaviour of small- and large-scale products and to perform static verifications. The models were validated based on the experimental results. It can be deduced that the use of compressed dowels for the connection of slabs as ceiling elements is feasible. It is shown that compressed wood used can adequately replicate the load-deformation response and failure mode of the slab.
