Abstract

The perception of vehicles by pedestrians, among them visually impaired, blind and elderly pedestrians, is a central topic of road safety. An understanding of the vehicle sound design with regard to auditory vehicle information, such as direction, acceleration, latency, velocity or operating condition, etc., is necessary and should be investigated by perceptual measurements. Because on the one hand the electric vehicles should not emit sound which is louder than necessary, on the other hand electric vehicle sound should be detectable for visually impaired pedestrians. This study investigates the auditory perceptibility of vehicle sounds in a parking lot situation. The investigations were conducted at the Multi modal measurement laboratory of Chair of Communication Acoustics at TU Dresden under the control of auditory and visual situation features.
