Abstract

In the early days of dental implantology, Brånemark recommended an unloaded healing phase of 3 months for implants placed in the mandible and 6 months for those placed in the maxilla. However, many patients have regarded this phase as very uncomfortable because they must wear a provisional restoration that often compromises esthetics and function. Nowadays, high primary implant stability can be achieved because of the introduction of modern implant designs and surfaces. Moreover, clinical investigations report high success rates when implants are immediately loaded. It is the aim of this article to outline the current literature on immediately loaded implants in the edentulous mandible and to derive treatment recommendations for the clinician.
