Development of a Hybrid Glass Balustrade

Abstract
More and more architects and builders request a clear design language in the building envelope. This includes parapets for loggias and balconies. Thus, glass railings, fixed with clamping elements, are increasingly used. These additional fixing elements are visible and have a negative influence of the appearance of the building envelope. Hence, the aim of a successfully completed research project of the Institute of Building Construction at the TU Dresden was the design and development of a composite glass balustrade with non-visible fixing. It consists of a coloured lacquered glass pane on the outer side and an inner carrier plate. The materials are bonded with a 2 mm-thick silicone adhesive layer. Four-point bending tests demonstrate that both plate materials participate in the load transfer and react as a composite plate. Therefore, the hybrid plate is nearly as thin as a commonly used laminated safety glass for glass railings. The durability of the adhesive bond was tested according to ETAG 002. The hybrid plate can directly be fixed in a non-visibly way at the backside of the carrier plate. No other metal substructure is needed. Due to the non-visible backside fixing at the base of the composite plate, the hybrid railing reaches a highly homogenous appearance and hence the highest design claims.
