Abstract

At Technische Universität Dresden, in the field of glass research, a design concept for a new innovative transparent roof system with a span of 15 m has been developed. The system can be described as a space grid structure made of steel glass modules in which all bar elements of the compression layer of a traditional space structure are replaced by glass panes. The glazing serves either as part of the load bearing system or as roof covering. The high compressive strength of glass allows for significantly large in-plane forces being distributed and transferred through the glass pane. The limited existence of national and international glass code regulations requires the execution of an extensive experimental testing program. This paper describes testing on the single pane to ensure the walk on and the post-breakage robustness as well as testing on the global structure to verify the function of the glass pane with regard to its axial load transfer. This includes either the buckling behaviour or the redundancy of the structure after failure of single panes. The load input in the glass pane corner realised over small glass edge areas is investigated at different knot geometries. Results show the applicability of the structural system despite the brittleness and sudden failure of load bearing glass and the difficulty to design knots that allow a significant force input over a small glass edge area.
