Abstract

Bridges are singularities in the railroad track. Because of longitudinal movements of the superstructure, the continuous stress level in the continuous welded rail is disturbed. Especially by long bridges, which are necessary by high-speed lines because of the admissible track radius and inclination, the track-bridge interaction has to be considered in the bridge design. If admissible forces in the rail are exceeded, it is common to interrupt the continuous rail by installing a rail expansion joint. But by understanding the cause of these additional rail stresses, it is possible to develop and introduce specific solutions in order to allow a continuous track also on long bridges.
