Abstract

Stator cage drives are a newly emerging class of low-voltage, high-current electrical machines that offer significant advantages for high-power applications. While previous research has primarily focused on low-power battery-supplied systems of up to 50 kW, this paper demonstrates the potential of stator cage technology for high-power grid-connected drives as an alternative to conventional medium- and high-voltage drives. After reviewing the current state of technology, the paper presents a numerically validated analytic machine model, based on which a 30 kW prototype and a 715 kW machine are investigated. Key findings reveal that although pole-changing capabilities have limited practical significance, stator cage drives achieve high fault tolerance, reduced short-circuit risks, and an increased power density. These advantages also make them favorable for the high-power range. A novel modular power electronics concept is proposed to enable grid-connected operation. The results indicate that stator cage drives are a promising alternative for future high-power drive applications with an integrated power supply.
