Abstract
Chemotherapy of liver metastases of colorectal cancer has been developed during the last years. The use of a combination therapy of 5-fluorouracil and irinotecan or oxaliplatin induces tumor responses in 50% of the patients and enables neoadjuvant treatment of nonresectable metastasis. Following secondary resection, prognosis does not differ from that of patients with initially resectable liver metastases. In palliative treatment, overall survival time has been prolonged to a median of 20 months due to the more effective chemotherapy. The benefit of adjuvant chemotherapy following resection of liver metastasis is not proven.
