Abstract

This paper systematically analyses the conducted emissions and input impedances of power electronics-based DC loads in the frequency range up to 150 kHz, including their dependence on and correlation with key influencing factors. Based on theoretical considerations and laboratory measurements on five different devices, generalised approaches and recommendations for analysing and modelling emissions in low-voltage DC (LVDC) grids are derived.Measurements in a dedicated test setup and corresponding circuit analyses show that DC loads typically comprise one or more power electronic switching stages generating emissions, i.e. current and voltage distortions. These can be classified as switching-frequency or power-frequency emissions. The resulting emission injected into the DC grid depends on the load level, the topology of the first switching stage, the design of DC-link capacitors and filters, and strongly on the connection cables and the grid impedance at the point of connection (POC). Furthermore, switching-frequency emissions exhibit fluctuations in both magnitude and frequency. The input impedance is primarily determined by the input filter and the input capacitance and typically shows low values with one or more resonance points. It varies with load at low frequencies but becomes largely load-independent at higher frequencies. The recommendations systematically incorporate these findings.
