Abstract

We are currently experiencing a paradigm shift in the product sound design. Apart from the sound insulation, the esthetic and the information design becomes more and more important. Sound waves are the information carrier. The meaning of the sounds for the people is accordingly high. The task of the designer is to create an object which fulfils all regulations with regard to functional requirements, capabilities and limitations in such a way that the product becomes an object of desire. The product becomes an object of desire when it is sensually appealing. Emotional design is very important. Music can induce emotions. There are important amount of research which try to describe the psychological relationship between human affect and music. Some of this knowledge from the music science is applicable to the sound design. Some relationship between the musical parameters, such as pitch, tempo, rhythm, loudness, loudness change, melody, modulation and harmony, and the various emotions can be established. Although it is not always simple and in some cases it is culture dependent. In this talk, the application of the knowledge from music to the vehicle acoustics, particularly for electric cars, will be discussed.
