Abstract

Carbon reinforced concrete makes a new thinking and design of structural load bearing elements possible. Thereby, the thin non-corroding carbon reinforcement – textile or rebars – with a high tensile strength can be placed in structures with a low concrete cover. This cover is only needed to guarantee the bond between concrete and reinforcement. Two different lightweight load bearing structures were developed, produced and tested at the Technische Universität (TU) Dresden. The first main structure is a 4.5 m long ceiling element, which consists of a 4.5 cm thick shell in longitudinal direction and two 4.0 cm thin webs below the shell at the longitudinal edges of the element. A reduction of the dead load up to 70.0 % compared to a usual rectangular cross section made of common steel reinforcement and the same concrete could be achieved. The second element is 5.0 m long and has a maximum height of 20 cm. To carry some higher live loads it is externally post-tensioned with carbon strips. Both structures are reinforced with carbon textile and carbon rebars.
