Abstract

Condition assessment as a basis for extending the remaining service life using digital twins. The Nibelungen Bridge in Worms serves as a pilot project for the use of a digital twin to extend the remaining service life of the structure. The project is funded by the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV) and the Rhineland-Palatinate State Mobility Agency (LBM). The Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt) defines a digital twin in the “Rahmendokument: Digitaler Zwilling Bundesfernstraßen – Definition und Konzeption” as “[…] a virtual, dynamic representation of the real system and its interdependencies. It supports optimized decision-making for sustainable infrastructure lifecycle management through (semi-)automated, bidirectional data and information exchange.” To create a representation of the real system, the structure must first be captured and assessed through an intensive survey. For this purpose, the Nibelungen Bridge employs state-of-the-art digital methods such as laser scanning, drone surveys, non-destructive testing, and structural monitoring. Using the BIM methodology, these data are integrated into the digital twin and into a highly detailed finite-element-model for model updating. The verification of structural stability and the evaluation of durability are thus based on the actual properties and responses of the structure. Remaining deficiencies will be assessed in real time in the digital twin based on condition indicators.
