Abstract

In contemporary popular culture, armed women have become popular. To fully understanding these narratives, reconstructing their historical dimension is necessary.
This article sketches the historical dimensions of Gunwomanship?
What do we know about armed women? Which rules and customs regulated female possession of arms, and what insights does this provide for the social, cultural and political structure of the respective societies?
To do the I will answer four questions: First, what do we know about armed women in different epochs and societies? Second, what kind of arms and weapons we are talking about? Third, what were the contexts and reasons for female armament? Fourth, what changes can be seen over time, and how were these modification motivated?
