Abstract

Carbon-reinforced concrete offers new construction capabilities compared to classical steel-reinforced concrete. In order to exploit these, strategies are developed that aim at a material-minimised design and machine-aided manufacturing methods. Simulations can support the inspiration process for innovative structures, and their evaluation as well as the gain of a deeper understanding of material, fracture and bonding behaviour of carbon reinforced concrete. This contribution provides an overview of different numerical methods intended to support the process from ideation, the transfer from the inspiration source to the structure of carbon reinforced concrete, and its investigation and evaluation. This includes methods deriving inspiration for geometry and rein-forcement designs from mathematics and botany, as well as model reduction strategies to efficiently compose and prelimi-narily test diverse geometries. Further on, various multiscale methods and material and damage models are introduced to reliably predict material behaviour. Additionally, a method for automatic crack detection is presented.
