Annealing behavior of oxide-dispersion strengthened (ODS) silver metal matrix composites

Abstract
The present paper reports on the annealing behavior of different industrially manufactured oxide-dispersion strengthened (ODS) silver alloys upon hot-extrusion and cold-working by tensile deformation and/or wire drawing. After tensile deformation all ODS silver alloys exhibit a higher recrystallization temperature compared to pure silver indicating retarded recrystallization. Alloys with the highest dispersion degree have a recrystallization temperature close to the melting point. After wire drawing a reduced recrystallization temperature is observed. This may be attributed to the inhomogeneous plastic flow and high strain rate during wire drawing resulting in a higher stored energy. Recrystallization reduces the intensity of the originally existing 〈100〉 fiber textures with fiber axis parallel to the extension direction. This weakening of the texture is accompanied with the occurrence of annealing twins. The recrystallization results are compared with published results of face-centered cubic (FCC) metals and dispersion strengthened FCC alloys after comparable deformation and annealing experiments.
