Abstract

The use of adhesives as a means of
fixing in glass construction is not
only appropriate to the material; it
also allows the creation of simple,
inconspicuous details. In glass
constructions, glass-to-glass-connections
are the main form of adhesive fixing,
but also glass-to-metal-laminations
are common. With the continuing
development of efficient and aging
resistant adhesives, it has become
possible to join components with a loadtransmitting
function. In this context,
structural sealant glazing (SSG) should
be mentioned as a technique for fixing
glass in a linear form to a supporting
structure. Elastic silicone adhesives with
a little strength used in this construction
need more glue surface. Because
of their black colour, they are also
more eye-catching. High transparent
adhesives like acrylates should be used
in glass construction because of the
trancparency of glass. Strong flexible
acrylates need less glue surface. Because
of the transparency of acrylates, only
the material of the substrates is visible.
The Institute of Building Construction
checked the performance of alternative
adhesives in glass constructions.
Different alternative adhesives were
tested. Special testing points are
the static and dynamic stress of
the lamination, the strength of the
adhesives and especially the aging
resistance of the joint.
