Abstract

Interior car sound is a result of the emitted sounds by several sound sources. The existence and dominance of the sound sources at electric cars differ in comparison to gasoline cars. The electric motor itself, the frequency inverter, the gear mechanism or the battery charger can generate audible high frequency tonal sounds. Nowadays, most of the OEMs try to define specification sheets for the individual suppliers. Depending to our experience with gasoline cars, these tonal components should be eliminated or masked. However, the expectation of the customers for the electric car sounds can differ from the expectations for the gasoline car sounds. In our recent investigation, we observed that some expectation differences between the customer groups. Particularly young and new car drivers are much more tolerant for new and tonal sounds rather than other customer groups. The aims of this investigation are to evaluate the perception of interior electric car sound and give some guidelines for the definition of specification sheets and active sound design (ASD) applications. A listening test was conducted to evaluate the sound quality of recorded, modified and designed sounds. The tonality, the harmony and the degree of consonance of the tonal components were taken into account.
