Abstract

This article presents the design of a fully integrated multi-standard beamforming frontend for both the 2.4 and 5.8 GHz ISM band. The frontend consists of four independent receive paths, allowing to adjust each signal in amplitude and phase and combining them afterwards. This so called RF combining not only reduces the hardware effort compared to conventional MIMO receivers but also allows a combination of the beamforming frontend with any wireless system in the given frequency range. The ASIC measures 1.2 mm × 1.9 mm and was designed in a 180 nm BiCMOS technology. The circuit was integrated with complete digital control circuitry and consumes around 120 mW from a 3 V supply. Using this ASIC, a beamsteering FMCW radar system was built, proofing the benefit of analog beamsteering. Most importantly, an almost error free distance measurement in a non-line-of-sight scenario has been demonstrated, which is to our knowledge the first time reported in literature.
