A 60 GHz LNA with Variable Transmission Characteristics Using Q-Enhancement

Abstract

In this work, we study and present a 60 GHz low noise amplifier (LNA) with variable transmission characteristics. The tuning is achieved by actively changing the quality factor of the transformers, used in the output matching network of each stage with a cross coupled pair (XCP). By controlling the amount of negative resistance of the XCP, and the strategic distribution of the gain peaks during the design phase, gain, center frequency, and bandwidth are tunable. The gain of the amplifier can be continuously set from 26 dB to 37 dB at the cost of 0.5 dB higher noise figure and 3 mW more dc power, while the center frequency can be varied from 59.4 GHz to 61.2 GHz, and the bandwidth can be tuned from 2 GHz to 4.2 GHz. As a proof of concept, the circuit is implemented in a 22 nm fully depleted silicon on insulator (FD-SOI) CMOS technology. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first millimeter wave LNA with variable transmission characteristics using Q-enhancement.
