Abstract
Aging is typically accompanied by a decrease in olfactory function. Major anatomical correlates for these changes can be found both at the level of the olfactory epithelium and in the brain. A similar decrease of function can also be found for intranasal trigeminal chemoreception. Hence, aging of intranasal chemosensory perception seems to be a multi-factorial process. Recent investigations suggest that age-related changes of the sense of smell may not be an inevitable fate.
