Abstract

The aim of this research was the application of gas pressure infiltration (GPI) to processing of chosen aluminum alloy based composites strengthened with carbon fibres (CF) covered with protective layer. Precision moulds made of graphite were developed and used for manufacturing CF/Al-MMC samples. In the first stage of the research composite unidirectionally strengthened samples were manufactured from chosen matrix alloys. Variable volume fractions of fibres as well as various infiltration sequences were applied during composite samples manufacturing. Chosen properties of the obtained composites were determined. The uniformity of the layout of fibres in composite matrix was evaluated by the examination of the microstructure and of the samples. Thermal expansion coefficients of the investigated alloys and composites were also analyzed. An optimal faction volume of the fibres as well as infiltration process parameters for manufacturing the composites out of selected components were determined. In the second part of this research an attempt of manufacturing three-directionally (3D) strengthened composites was made. For the purpose of this research special preforms were prepared by plaiting the fibres. The layout of the fibres in the composite matrix was also examined.
