Abstract
Structural glass components reach failure at impact loading or due to bending stresses. Moreover, environmental factors and material inclusions can lead to sudden failure of glass structures. Tempered glass is a type of safety glass that has complex fracture patterns, where upon crack initiation, a tempered glass plate breaks into small fragments instead of shattering into large pieces. Internal residual stresses are induced in tempered glass due to the underlying thermal treatment. The fragmentation of tempered glass is a dynamic process, where uninterrupted crack propagation, branching, merging and formation of fragments are continuously fed by internal residual stresses. The contribution at hand investigates the mechanics of fragmentation in tempered glass from a com-putational point of view. Predictive fracture modelling approaches and associated numerical develop-ments are indicated. A newly developed fracture framework is outlined, where key aspects regarding locality and nonlocality of fracture are highlighted. The art of constitutive modelling is bridged to the prediction of complex phenomena in fracture mechanics, which include dynamic fracture of materials. The suggested numerical framework emphasizes computational efficiency in terms of both the ground-state fracture model itself and the associated finite element implementation. A parallel finite element framework and associated synchronization algorithms are used to simulate fragmentation of tempered glass. The numerical results of glass fragmentation are compared to associated testing-based relations, which exist in the literature.
