Abstract

Background. Children should be introduced to oral health issues and visits to the dentist at an early age. Primary prevention dental topics are already discussed in daycare centers. To date, there has been no scientific analysis of children's books on tooth brushing/dental visits and their quality. Objectives. The project examines which children's books are available on the topics of toothbrushing behavior and oral health knowledge and their quality from a dental and health psychology perspective. Criteria for the evaluation of children's books are established and recommendations for the design of children's books are given. Materials and methods. In 2020, a literature search was carried out in German-speaking countries. Available books were assessed according to a standardized system with regard to the importance of tooth brushing, graphic and linguistic design, realistic presentation and age-appropriate didactic communication of dental knowledge in six categories and an overall score. Results. A total of N = 87 children's books on the topics of visiting the dentist or brushing teeth were identified, of which N = 78 (89.7%) could be evaluated. There was satisfactory agreement between two independent raters (Krippendorff's alpha = 0.91). Overall, N = 14 children's books can be recommended. Notably older books appeared less suitable in terms of their graphic presentation and linguistic design. Conclusion. There are numerous children's books on the subject, but they vary in quality. Future studies could investigate the extent to which reading children's books aloud has a positive effect on oral health knowledge and visits to the dentist.
