Abstract

The new handbook ‘Experiences and Perspectives from the State Initiative “SDG 4 – Education for Sustainable Development in University Teacher Training in Saxony”’, written by Dr Rachel Bowden (ZLSB, TU Dresden) and Gregor Ritschel (ZLS, University of Leipzig), summarises the preliminary key findings and results of the state initiative. It is aimed in particular at ESD stakeholders, university lecturers and project coordinators who wish to strengthen and embed education for sustainable development (ESD) in university teacher training.
The publication offers a practice-oriented collection of examples, reflections and recommendations that have been developed and tested at the universities of Leipzig and Dresden. In addition to concrete practical examples – including seminars and lecture series on topics such as climate change, social justice and global perspectives – the handbook contains extensive sections for reflection. These analyse, among other things, the challenges and conditions for success in implementing ESD approaches, the curricular anchoring of ESD, as well as interdisciplinary cooperation and the integration of extracurricular learning locations. It also shows how cooperation with civil society actors and sustainable initiatives can promote mutual knowledge transfer between science and society
